Former President Donald Trump blasted the Biden administration and defended Rep. Henry Cuellar following his indictment by the Department of Justice, suggesting the charges came due to the Texas Democrat's stance on border security.

"Biden just Indicted Henry Cuellar because the Respected Democrat Congressman wouldn’t play Crooked Joe’s Open Border game," Trump posted on Sunday. "He was for Border Control, so they said, 'Let's use the FBI and DOJ to take him out!' This is the way they operate. They’re a bunch of D.C. Thugs, and at some point they will be paying a very big price for what they have done to our Country. CROOKED JOE BIDEN IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!"

Cuellar and his wife were indicted Friday on conspiracy and bribery charges, reportedly in connection with a Department of Justice probe into ties between U.S. business leaders and Azerbaijan.

The couple allegedly accepted nearly $600,000 in bribes from an Azerbaijan-controlled energy company and a bank in Mexico from 2014 to 2021, according to the Associated Press. He allegedly agreed to advance the interests of the country and the bank in the U.S. in exchange for the money, according to the indictments reviewed by the wire service.

The Texas congressman also allegedly agreed to deliver a pro-Azerbaijan speech on the House floor of the U.S. House and influence legislation favorable to Azerbaijan. In a statement Friday, Cuellar said that he and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, “are innocent of these allegations.”
