Elon Musk tweets about the geomagnetic solar storm and how it's affecting his Starlink satellites

Tech and space entrepreneur Elon Musk tweets on X, formerly Twitter, about the geomagnetic solar storm that is hitting the earth at this time. He includes several magnificent photos of the Northern Lights, which are reaching way farther south than they normally do. 

He writes that there is a "Major geomagnetic solar storm happening right now. Biggest in a long time. Starlink satellites are under a lot of pressure, but holding up so far."

Starlink is the satellite network developed by SpaceX, Musk's private spaceflight company which endeavors to provide low-cost internet to remote locations. 

"As of April 2024, there are 5,874 Starlink satellites in orbit, of which 5,800 are operational, according to Astronomer Jonathan McDowell who tracks the constellation on his website," according to the Starlink website.
