Shelter-in-place ordered after Hazmat spill on Interstate 10 in Arizona

Arizona DPS reports that the crash involved an 18-wheeler that rolled over and leaked hazardous material.

A shelter-in-place order and some evacuations have been called for on Tuesday after a crash and Hazmat spill on Interstate 10 in Tucson, Arizona.

ADOT reports that the interstate is closed and it is not known when it will reopen. 

According to a local outlet, residents in a one-mile radius of the area near the crash were being warned to evacuate or take shelter immediately.

The residents were asked to turn off machines that bring in any outside air, including air conditioners and heaters. 

Arizona DPS reports that the crash involved an 18-wheeler that rolled over and leaked hazardous material, in this case liquid nitric acid.

"The Department's Hazardous Materials Response Unit, along with partner agencies are working together to mitigate the incident," DPS said in an email, according to 13 News. "Out of an abundance of caution first responders are working to evacuate a perimeter around the area of the incident."
