Cheney faces likely ouster from GOP House leadership after blasting Trump during floor speech

"Today we face a threat America has never seen before. A former president who provoked a violent attack on this Capitol in an effort to steal the election has resumed his aggressive effort to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him," Cheney said.

On the eve of her likely ouster from a House GOP leadership post, House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney during a floor speech once again condemned former President Trump's claims that the 2020 election contest was tainted by fraud.

"Today we face a threat America has never seen before. A former president who provoked a violent attack on this Capitol in an effort to steal the election has resumed his aggressive effort to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him. He risks inciting further violence. Millions of Americans have been misled by the former president. They have heard only his words, but not the truth, as he continues to undermine our democratic process, sowing seeds of doubt about whether democracy really works at all," Cheney said during her remarks.

"I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president's crusade to undermine our democracy," she said.

Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching then-President Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

House Republicans may remove Cheney from the House GOP leadership role in a vote on Wednesday.

Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have both backed Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York to replace Cheney in the leadership slot.
