Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth, chairman of the House Budget Committee, announced Tuesday that he will not be seeking 2022 reelection.

The Kentucky lawmaker made the announcement of Twitter.

"It's been an incredible journey since my first campaign in 2006 until now," he wrote. "I will continue to fight for Louisville in Washington for another 15 months, and then, I will retire from Congress."

The 73-year-old Yarmuth has held the seat since 2007.

The decision is expected to make Democrats' effort to keep control of the House more challenging, with having the majority now but just a few seats.
