At just 25, Republican Madison Cawthorn will soon become the youngest member in Congress

When 25-year-old congressman-elect Madison Cawthorn is sworn in to represent North Carolina's 11th congressional district next year, he will become the youngest sitting member of the nation's legislature, a distinction currently held by progressive Democratic icon New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The newly elected Republican said he believes that Americans of his generation lean toward the right on the political spectrum — during an interview on the John Solomon Reports podcast, Cawthorn said that "a libertarian conservative is probably the best way to describe my generation because, you know, we have very conservative politics."

But, Cawthorn said, "Republicans choosing to die on a lot of social hills has made us less effective in the minds of most millennials," which he believes has "really pushed them over to the far left." He said that most social issues should be decided by the states and that his generation can be won through the promise of increased freedom.

The soon-to-be congressman wants to put forward legislation pertaining to oversight for the many "three-letter" government agencies that he described as "the fourth branch of government."

He also wants to join the House Foreign Affairs Committee and tackle the issue of China.

"A big thing that I want to do is really be the face of healthcare reform for the American people within the Republican Party," he said, explaining that he supports a free market for healthcare and reducing healthcare-related regulations. But he does not expect to secure bipartisan support from Democrats on the issue.
