Virginia Democrat Rep. Donald McEach died Monday of cancer. He was 61.

His seat will be filled by the winner of a special election, with the date to be set by GOP Gov. Glen Youngkin.

McEachin died from colorectal cancer, said his chief of staff, Tara Rountree.

"Valiantly, for years now, we have watched him fight and triumph over the secondary effects of his colorectal cancer from 2013. Rountree said. "Tonight, he lost that battle."

McEachin, who has represented the state's Richmond area in Congress since 2017, was reelected earlier this month by 64.4%, making him one of 213 Democrats elected to the next Congress, according to Politico.
