Former Beaverton, Oregon, Mayor Dennis "Denny" Doyle pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography on Wednesday.

Prosecutors asserted that between November 2014 and December 2015, Doyle was in possession of explicit materials depicting minors under the age of 12, according to Oregon Live.

Authorities learned of Doyle's illicit materials when someone handed in an old thumb drive containing the materials. Under the plea agreement, Doyle would serve one year and one day in prison so as to make him eligible for early release for good behavior. He would also have to register as a sex offender and remain under supervised release for five years.

The maximum penalty he could face is a 20-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. The judge had indicated that he is not bound to accept the plea deal Doyle negotiated with prosecutors. His sentencing is scheduled for January of 2023.

"You know, we make mistakes," he said while leaving the courtroom.
