Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called the Thursday indictment of former President Donald Trump "un-American" and said that the legal system has been weaponized.

"The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head," DeSantis wrote on Twitter. "It's un-American."

A Manhattan grand jury voted to indict former President Donald Trump over his alleged role in a payment to Stormy Daniels in 2016, making him the first former president to face criminal charges.

DeSantis referred to Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan attorney general leading the charge against Trump, as "Soros-backed," and criticized his handling of other criminal cases.

"The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct," the Florida governor stated. "Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent."

"Florida will not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstances at issue with this Soros-backed Manhattan prosecutor and his political agenda," the tweet concluded.

Legal experts have derided the case as legally baseless and Trump's new personal attorney, Joe Tacopina, has asserted that the payment Trump made to his then-lawyer Michael Cohen was in fact a legitimate legal fee.
