Four years after the prison killing of James 'Whitey' Bulger, a Boston crime boss, authorities have charged three men in his murder.

Fotios "Freddy" Geas, Paul J. DeCologero, and Sean McKinnon each face charges of conspiracy to commit first degree murder in connection with his death, NPR reported.

Bulger ran the Irish mob in Boston for most of the 70s and 80s but also acted as an FBI informant, feeding them information on his rivals. He was murdered in 2018 at USP Hazelton, where he was serving a life sentence.

Despite being a known informant, a status that would earn him the ire of other inmates, prison officials placed Bulger in standard accommodations with no additional protection, the outlet noted.

The late mob boss's family sued the Federal Bureau of Prisons and 30 employees for failing to protect him.

Watchdog group Empower Oversight filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request on Thursday seeking information on Bulger's initial apprehension and information that "could have accelerated" his arrest.
