Special counsel Jack Smith is reportedly nearing the end of his criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump and his handling of classified materials.

Smith has concluded interviewing nearly every employee at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate as part of the investigation, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing "people familiar with the matter."

Attorney General Merrick Garland tapped Smith to handle the Department of Justice's investigation into Trump in November, after he announced his bid for the White House in 2024.

Trump's attorneys on Tuesday requested a meeting with Garland over the investigation, saying Trump was "being treated unfairly."

At issue is Trump's storage of classified materials at the estate, which the FBI raided in August of 2022, even after Trump voluntarily cooperated with a grand jury subpoena.

The probe is widely believed to present the most formidable legal challenge to Trump, who is facing charges in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's case and could face charges as part of Fulton County DA Fani Willis's investigation into his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results in Georgia.
