Justice Department to investigate Louisville Police Department following Breonna Taylors death

The Justice Department said Monday the agency is opening a probe into the Louisville Police Department what it consider a "pattern" of unreasonable force – more than a year after officers on the force fatally shot Breonna Taylor.

The announcement of the investigation was made by Attorney General who said the agency will into whether the Louisville Jefferson County Metro Government and the Louisville Metro Police Department engaged in a "pattern or practice" of violating of constitutional rights or federal statutes.

"Today’s announcement is based upon an extensive review of publicly available information about LMPD conducted but the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division," Garland said.

The investigation will also look at officers' training and whether systems in place that keep officers accountable.

The investigation will also whether the police department is using unconstitutional stops and illegally executing search warrants, according to the Associated Press.

The unarmed Taylor was fatally shot in March 2020 inside her apartment by Louisville police officers as part of a drug investigation.
