Former Nevada Sen. Harry Reid revealed this week that for years he attempted unsuccessfully to obtain access to what were reportedly UFO fragments possessed by aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

Reid made the surprising revelation during an interview with the New Yorker in a report on the Pentagon's interest in unidentified, possibly extraterrestrial, flying objects.

"I was told for decades that Lockheed had some of these retrieved materials," he told reporter Gideon Lewis-Kraus. "And I tried to get, as I recall, a classified approval by the Pentagon to have me go look at the stuff. They would not approve that."

"I don't know what all the numbers were, what kind of classification it was, but they would not give that to me," he added.

Lewis-Kraus said Lockheed-Martin did not respond to requests for comment for the report.
