A Russian Su-27 fighter jet collided Tuesday with a U.S. drone over the Black Sea, officials said.

The drone, named MQ-9, was flying in international airspace when two Russian jets attempted to intercept it, Sky News reported

"Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9," U.S. Air Force General James Hecker said. "In fact, this unsafe and unprofessional act by the Russians nearly caused both aircraft to crash."

He said that the United States and its allies will continue to fly in international airspace, and he urged the Kremlin to remain safe and professional.
