President Biden will withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan over the course of several months, with a total troop withdrawal by Sept. 11.

The president is expected Wednesday to formally announce his plan, according to The Washington Post.

Biden's plan of a phased withdrawal will still leave troops in Afghanistan after the proposed May 1 deadline set by the Afghanistan government and former Trump administration.

"This is the immediate, practical reality that our policy review discovered," a person familiar with the deliberations with the Taliban and was not something President Biden believed was in the national interest," a person familiar with the matter told the newspaper.

There are 2,500 to 3,500 U.S. troops now in Afghanistan.
