Harris to attend Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland

Vice President Kamala Harris will attend a peace summit on the Ukraine war later this month, the White House confirmed on Monday.

The Summit on Peace in Ukraine is not a peace negotiation between the Ukrainian government and that of the Russian Federation, which was not invited to the affair, CNBC reported.

"The Vice President will underscore the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s effort to secure a just and lasting peace, based on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the principles of the UN Charter," the White House said in a press release. "The Vice President will reaffirm support for the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against ongoing Russian aggression. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will join the Vice President in representing the United States at the Summit."

Harris's attendance follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky inviting President Joe Biden to attend the conference, according to The Hill. In recent days, moreover, Zelensky has attempted to secure the support of Asian nations for his efforts. China, notably, has indicated it will not attend the conference.

The summit comes as the Russians have made gains on the battlefield in recent months, notably conquering the fortress town of Avdiivka earlier this year and seizing land in the Kharkiv region.

The conference is set for June 15-16 and will take place at the Bürgenstock Resort.
