Joe Biden and Keir Starmer to meet at White House next week to discuss global conflicts
The White House on Friday announced that President Joe Biden will host British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the Oval Office next week, where the pair will discuss the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Europe.
Starmer became England's prime minister in July, after his Labour Party flipped control of Parliament. The meeting will be the second time the pair have met since Starmer took office, but the first since Biden dropped his bid for reelection.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the two will meet on Friday, Sept. 13, where they will also discuss how to get a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, ways to protect international shipping in the Red Sea from the Houthi, and how to advance a "free and open Indo-Pacific."
"They will also discuss opportunities to strengthen U.S.-UK cooperation to secure supply chains and increase climate resilience," Jean-Pierre said in a statement. "President Biden will underscore the importance of continuing to strengthen the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom."
Biden and Starmer previously met at the White House while the prime minister was visiting Washington, D.C., for the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) summit in July. The meeting took place shortly after Starmer replaced Rishi Sunak as the country's political leader.
It is not clear whether Starmer will also meet with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the Democratic nominee for president, during his trip to Washington.
