Alabama New Year's Eve shooting leaves 1 dead, 9 injured amid violent holiday weekend nationwide

One person is dead and nine others are wounded after a New Year's Eve shooting in downtown Mobile, Ala., police said Sunday.

Shortly before midnight Saturday, Mobile Police Department officers responded to a call regarding shots fired in downtown Mobile and discovered a 24-year-old male who was pronounced deceased at the scene, officials said.

The nine other gunshot victims range between the ages of 17 to 57. They were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening to severe injuries, according to police. Gunfire also hit two businesses.

Police have described the suspect as an "unknown subject" and said, "This is an active investigation. We will provide updates as details become available."

The shooting is one of several across the United States over the holiday weekend. 

New Year's Eve shootings in Philadelphia left nine people wounded, including two teenagers and an 87-year-old woman, according to local outlet Fox 29

Police in Fairfax County, Virginia, discovered a man deceased with multiple gunshots in a New Year's Eve shooting in Lorton, local outlet WTOP reported.

Just north of Fairfax County, two people died and two were injured in a New Year's Day shooting in Prince George's County, Maryland, per Fox 5 DC.

Minutes after midnight, police were called to a shooting in Van Buren County, Michigan, after a 62-year-old man fired celebratory gunshots. Officers found a 40-year-old man shot in the head and a 35-year-old man shot multiple times in the back. Both men died, and the suspect was brought into custody on multiple counts of recklessly discharging a firearm causing death, according to local KOMO News.

About 20 minutes after the Michigan shooting, one man was killed and three people were injured in a shooting in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, News 4 reported.

Hours into 2023, Baltimore police responded to a shooting that left one woman dead and one man injured, according to Fox Baltimore.

Early Sunday morning, one man was killed and another man was injured in a shooting in Boston, police said. The deceased victim, identified as Jymal Cox, a father of two, was reportedly killed over a spilled drink at a party, a relative of Cox told local outlet WCVB.
