The Albuquerque police chief on Tuesday said a "primary suspect" is being detained in connection to the killings of four Muslim men in New Mexico.

"We tracked down the vehicle believed to be involved in a recent murder of a Muslim man in Albuquerque. The driver was detained and he is our primary suspect for the murders. We will update the media later this afternoon," Chief Harold Medina said on Twitter.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said the town is "grateful for the unified effort" from law enforcement that led to a suspect being brought into custody.

"We hope their swift action brings an increased sense of safety for so many who are experiencing fear from the recent shootings," he wrote on Twitter.

The arrest comes after police released information on Sunday about the vehicle thought to have been used by the homicide suspect.

Over the past few weeks, officials found the bodies of Naeem Hussain, 25; Muhammed Afzaal Hussain, 27; and Aftab Hussein, 41. The first murder connected to the suspect was in November, involving Mohammad Ahmadi, 62.
