A shooting incident southwest of Miami in the Everglades National Park on Sunday night has resulted in the suspect being taken into custody without incident.

The National Park Service first responded an "active shooter" alert and urged nearby residents and tourists to shelter in place.

“Main park road (SR 9336) closed for public safety. Visitors/residents in Flamingo should shelter in place. Suspect is a 33 y.o. white male. Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies are coordinating the response," an alert read.

Authorities have yet to release the name of the suspect.

A press release explains that earlier in the day, rangers responded to a domestic violence investigation that involved the same man. When officials arrived at his car, the vehicle seemed to be abandoned and rangers believed he fled into the woods armed.

Some roads and entrances were shut down while they searched for the suspect. At 6:45 p.m., shots were purportedly fired by the suspect at park rangers. However, the suspect surrendered and was arrested at about 9 p.m.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
