Rittenhouse jury retires for night, deliberations set to resume Wednesday

The jury in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse has retired for the evening without reaching a verdict on the first day of deliberations.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Judge Bruce Schroeder retired the jury around 5:50 p.m. CT following eight hours of deliberations.

Prior to the start of deliberations, six of the 18 jurors were selected as alternates via a lottery system overseen by Rittenhouse and his defense team. Rittenhouse drew six slips of paper from a raffle drum in order to select the alternates.

Following the selection, the six alternates were asked to wait while the other 12 began deliberations. 

The Associated Press notes that this has been a tradition for over 20-years in Schroeder's courtroom where the defendant helps pick the randomly selected jurors.

Rittenhouse is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and two counts of recklessly endangering safety. 

Jurors will resume deliberations tomorrow morning.
