Virginia teacher shot by 6-year-old was 'last person to leave' as she rushed kids to safety: police
The Virginia teacher who was allegedly shot by a 6-year-old student was the "last person to leave" her classroom as she rushed students to safety despite being injured, police said.
Abigail Zwerner was teaching first grade at Richneck Elementary School on Friday when the child "displayed a firearm, pointed it at her and fired one round," which went through her hand and into her upper chest, Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said Monday.
Despite being injured, Zwerner "was still able to get all of her students out of that classroom," Drew said.
"Mrs. Zwerner was the last person to leave that class," he said.
When she left the scene of the incident and started going toward the school administration office, she stopped and "turned around to make sure that every one of those students was safe" before making her way to the office for first aid, Drew said.
Officials say the shooting was intentional. The 6-year-old had taken a firearm that was legally purchased by his mother and brought it to school in his backpack, authorities said.
"The child is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility," Drew said.
