Actor Clarence Gilyard Jr., who achieved fame for his roles in "Die Hard," "Top Gun" and "Matlock," has died at the age of 66.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas announced his death, the cause of which remains unknown as of press time. Gilyard had taught acting at the school in his later years, the Associated Press reported.

"Professor Gilyard was a beacon of light and strength for everyone around him at UNLV," said University film chair Heather Addison. "Whenever we asked him how he was, he would cheerfully declare that he was 'Blessed!' But we are truly the ones who were blessed to be his colleagues and students for so many years."

Early in his career, Gilyard appeared on television shows such as "Diff'rent Strokes" and "The Facts of Life." He later made appearances in "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "The Karate Kid: Part II," among other productions on both the stage and screen.
