After the 2020 Boston Marathon was pushed to the fall and then ultimately canceled, the Boston Athletic Association said Wednesday that the originally scheduled April 2021 marathon is now postponed until at least the fall of next year.

The B.A.A. is working with officials to make sure a fall 2021 date would be possible. Amid growing coronavirus cases and only six months until the originally scheduled date, the association's CEO Tom Grilk says it would be impossible to safely hold the marathon in April. Organizers hope to solidify a date for the annual 26.2 mile race before the end of this year.

This year’s race was supposed to be the 124th edition of the world’s oldest and most prestigious race, which ended up being held as a 10-day virtual experience.
