Pence calls for MLB to apologize for Dodgers inviting anti-Catholic bigots' to game for award

Pence is expected to launch his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination next week.

Former Vice President Mike Pence says Major League Baseball "should be apologizing to Catholics across America” for the Los Angles Dodgers’ decision to recognize the group Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at the team’s Pride Night festivities later this month.

“Having been raised in a Catholic family, the Dodgers decision to invite the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a hateful group that blatantly mocks Catholicism, to their event next month is deeply offensive," Pence tweeted Wednesday.

Pence is expected to launch his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination next week.

In his tweet, Pence refers to the group – a charity, protest and satirical performance organization that attempts to use humor, drag and religious imagery to call attention to sexual intolerance – as "anti-Catholic bigots," according to the Los Angeles Time.

The Los Angeles chapter of the group was initially scheduled to receive a community hero award at a June 16 Dodgers home game.

Last month, the team changed its mind amid backlash, then reverse course again last week amid backlash from LGBTQ+ groups and others.

“The MLB should not be apologizing to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,” Pence wrote in his tweet. "They should be apologizing to Catholics across America. America’s pastime should respect the faith of every American no matter what.”
