Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Monday told staff Monday the online retail giant plans to cut 9,000 more jobs within the coming weeks.

The cuts come after Amazon announced in January that 18,000 employees would be laid off. Monday's layoffs are the second largest in the company's history, according to the Associated Press.

Tech companies have announced massive job layoffs in 2023 following massive pandemic-era growth.

"Some may ask why we didn’t announce these role reductions with the ones we announced a couple months ago," Jassy said in a memo Monday to employees. "The short answer is that not all of the teams were done with their analyses in the late fall; and rather than rush through these assessments without the appropriate diligence, we chose to share these decisions as we’ve made them so people had the information as soon as possible."

Amazon's cuts will hit the company's profitable areas such as its cloud computing unit and advertising business.
