Gas prices nationwide continue to decline from their precipitous peaks earlier this summer, with multiple states in the south falling below $4 per gallon, though prices remain up elsewhere throughout the country.

Gas prices tracked by national auto club AAA show national average rates at about $4.30 per gallon, down from $4.41 the day before and $4.54 a week ago.

The monthlong decline is even more stark, with prices four weeks ago having rested at a near-record $4.90 per gallon.

AAA’s map shows the lowest prices in the country within the South, with the majority of the states in that region showing prices below $4 per gallon.

Prices remained highest, meanwhile, in the west, with California, Oregon and Washington all showing prices at above $5 per gallon, with California still posting a whopping $5.75 per gallon statewide average.

Pump prices in New England were also elevated, with every state there still above $4 per gallon.
