California church displays nativity scene that incorporates Black Lives Matter

The Claremont United Methodist Church's 2020 nativity scene incorporates support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Behind figures of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus are artistic renderings of individuals with face masks and signs.

One of the signs is a Black Lives Matter sign. Another sign says "I can't breathe!" Some of the signs reference scriptures. One reads, "Racism is a pandemic too." Another sign says "Am I next?"

The display also includes a list of names of deceased individuals, among them George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and others.

"Mary knows the sorrow of any parent who has ever lost a child, and she stands in solidarity with all who seek justice," the church's lead pastor, Rev. Karen Clark Ristine said in a Facebook post that includes a photo of the display.

Daily Bulletin reported that a statement near the display says: “We affirm and join the call for justice and equity by the Black Lives Matter movement to ensure that Black lives matter as much as any other life. Our faith in Christ challenges us to stand with Mary in her call for justice for the poor, the marginalized, and the oppressed.”
