Two dozen new moons discovered around Jupiter, bringing total to nearly 100
Solar System’s largest planet has long held title for most natural satellites.
Astronomers this week announced the discovery of another two dozen moons around Jupiter, bringing the total number of satellites around the Solar System’s largest planet to nearly 100.
An additional 12 moons were recorded around the planet, with a total of 92 officially confirmed.
Jupiter now has the most officially confirmed moons in the Solar System, bypassing Saturn’s official total of 83, though Saturn may have significantly more unconfirmed moons orbiting its surface.
Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System, with Saturn taking the second-largest spot; both comprise about 90% of the non-solar mass among planets.
