Tech giant Apple this week filed a patent indicating the company's potential plans to release a "foldable" mobile platform in the near future, a possible foray by the company into the growing mobile market for more compact phones and media players.

The patent, filed on Tuesday, indicates the possible development of a "foldable electronic device," one with a "touch sensor layer."

Also referenced in the patent is a potential "virtual shutter button" and "additional touch layers."

Industry analyst websites have speculated that the company could be gearing up for a foldable phone launch this year or next.

Competitor companies including Samsung and Microsoft have already released several versions of foldable smart phones, a bid to maintain advanced mobile technology while offering users more compact phone options.
