Facebook removes multiple Chinese accounts reportedly targeting US elections

Facebook announced that it had recently deactivated several fake accounts that were allegedly made by China to  influence U.S. elections and politics.

In an investigative report by its parent company Meta, the social media company reportedly shut down 4,789 fake Facebook accounts that targeted U.S. politics and at least 13 accounts targeting India.

Meta's report states it's unclear whether the objective of the accounts was to “build partisan tensions, build audiences among these politicians’ supporters, or to make the fake accounts sharing authentic content appear more genuine.”

Forbes reports the accounts on Facebook would copy and paste X posts from politicians from the Democrat and Republican parties.

Some of the politicians include former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi D-Calif. and Rep. Matt Gaetz R-Fl.

Other accounts that were removed by Facebook included groups targeting Tibet by pretending to be journalists and activists to obtain information.
