Technology giant Apple this week announced that it is launching a self-repair program for experienced users, a major shift for a company that has famously been antipathetic toward user-led technical undertakings on its products.
The company’s new Self Service Repair “will allow customers who are comfortable with completing their own repairs access to Apple genuine parts and tools,” the company said in a blog post.
“The initial phase of the program will focus on the most commonly serviced modules, such as the iPhone display, battery, and camera,” the company added. “The ability for additional repairs will be available later next year.”
Previously, consumers who needed repairs on their Apple products were required to either send their devices back to Apple, take them to a certified third-party technician, or attempt the repair on their own using third-party-acquired parts.
The program “is intended for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices,” Apple noted in the announcement.
“For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair,” it added.
