Twitter is testing an edit button after years of users requesting the feature, the social media company announced Thursday.

"If you see an edited Tweet it's because we're testing the edit button," Twitter wrote. "This is happening and you'll be okay."

The feature will allow users to edit their tweets within 30 minutes of them being posted – including the fixing of typos, Twitter also said.

Unlike other social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter users since the company's founding in 2006 have been forced to either delete tweets or keep posts with mistakes.

Edited tweets will be labeled, and users will be able to view the post's edit history to see previous versions.

The restriction will "help protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said," Twitter also said.

The company is testing the edit tweet feature internally among a small group of people to identify potential issues before expanding the feature to Twitter Blue subscribers in a single unknown country later this month.
