The Manhattan district attorney's office will reportedly start presenting its case Monday before a grand jury about former President Donald Trump's alleged involvement in paying hush money to former adult film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is laying the foundation for possible criminal charges against Trump within the next several months, people with knowledge of the issue told The New York Times.

Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen is reportedly involved in the case. He was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to the hush money.

Prosecutors are attempting to show that Trump and his business falsified records to classify Cohen's $130,000 payment to Daniels as a legal expense, which would be a misdemeanor charge. If prosecutors could prove Trump falsified the records to conceal another crime in violation of state election law, then a harsher charge could be levied.

Daniels lost in court against Trump in a libel lawsuit last year.
