An attorney for former President Trump is calling for an investigation into the Manhattan district attorney's probe of his client and his family business.

Attorney Joseph Tacopina told New York City's Department of Investigation Commissioner Jocelyn Strauber in a letter Friday that the actions of the Manhattan district attorney's office "are a blatant and unconstitutional attempt to interfere with a federal election by attempting to prosecute President Trump to make him unable to run for re-election."

Trump was elected president in 2015, lost in 2019 and is seeking reelection again this year.

Former lead prosecutors Cyrus Vance, Carey Dunne and Mark Pomerantz attacked Trump "purely for personal and political reasons," and the fight continued after they left and District Attorney Alvin Bragg took over the office, Tacopina also said.

He also argues the district attorney's office has wasted taxpayer dollars in its attempt to prosecute Trump and some prosecutors even pushed ahead with the case despite concerns that there was not enough evidence to justify it.

The Trump Organization was found guilty in December of criminal tax fraud and later fined $1.6 million as part of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's probe.

The Manhattan district attorney's office is still investigating hush money payments Trump allegedly made through his former attorney Michael Cohen to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016.

Cohen is set to testify Monday to a grand jury, The Associated Press reported.
