Former President Donald Trump on Thursday regained access to his accounts at Facebook and Instagram, regaining control of the powerful social media tools just over two years after he originally lost them.

Officials at Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta confirmed to multiple media outlets on Thursday the former president's restored access to his accounts from which he was locked out of in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Trump lost access to those counts, along with his iconic Twitter account, following the riot as tech leaders claimed that his continued presence on those social networks posed a risk of further violence.

Meta said in January that its reinstatement of Trump's account would come with "new guardrails" which they said would "deter repeat offenses."

Among the new rules from the company include tightened policing of "content that delegitimizes an upcoming election," Meta said.
