Moderna said Tuesday its Covid-19 vaccine is safe and appears effective in adolescents, according to news reports.

The pharmaceutical company now plans to ask federal regulators next month to approve the vaccine for use in 12- to 17-year-olds.

The announcement follows a clinical trial by Moderna of 3,732 children in that age group in the United States. Blood tests showed that the vaccine produced an immune response that was equivalent to earlier findings in adults, according to CNN.
