The Democratic Socialists of America backed six city council candidates in the New York City primary elections Tuesday, with two of them having taken the lead on Wednesday.

According to The New York Post, the candidates endorsed by NYC-DSA for the primary are Adolfo Abreu, Tiffany Caban, Jaslin Kaur, Michael Hollingsworth, Alexa Aviles, and Brandon West.

The outcomes of Tuesday's races in NYC, particularly the marquee mayoral race, are being considered another possible bellwether on how candidates from the Democratic Party's most liberal wing will fare, considering past calls to "defund" police departments amid a surge in crime in many cities across the county, including New York.

In the mayoral race, the leader as of Wednesday, with roughly 36% of the vote was Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain.
