Former Sen. Joe Lieberman during an interview on Wednesday's episode of The Water Cooler said that if Joe Biden wins the upcoming presidential contest the Democratic candidate can curb the "excessive" leftward direction within his party.

Lieberman said that Biden's record falls into the category of the center-left.

"If Joe's himself, he has the potential ... to rescue the Democratic Party from the left," Lieberman said while noting that this does not mean that some members should be ousted from the party."

Lieberman described the Green New Deal as a plan that goes far beyond the issue of climate change and would entail "a massive reorganization of American economy, American government" and likely thrust the nation into depression.

"I'm counting on Biden if he wins to stop this kind of excessive left movement in the Democratic Party, and I believe he will," Lieberman told host David Brody.

Biden is vying to defeat incumbent President Donald Trump during the 2020 presidential election contest as Trump seeks a second term in office.
