State Rep. Geoff Diehl won the Massachusetts Republican primary on Tuesday, becoming the party nominee in the November race for the governor's mansion.

Earning the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, Diehl defeated rival Chris Doughty, earning 55.9% of the vote, according to the Associated Press.

Trump appeared in a tele-rally on Diehl's behalf and derided Doughty as a RINO, or Republican in Name Only, during the campaign, according to the Boston Herald.

"Doughty will do nothing but surrender to the radical left wing extremists," Trump said. "He'll sell out the conservatives every single time."

"If you want to save Massachusetts from the radical left, then vote for Geoff Diehl," Trump continued.

Should Diehl triumph in November, he will succeed Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, who declined to seek reelection after twice winning the state's top job in the heavily Democratic state. Massachusetts does not impose term limits on the governorship.
