Nebraska state Sen. Mike Flood won the special election Tuesday to replace former U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who resigned from his seat in March over federal corruption charges.

Fortenberry resigned after a California jury found him guilty in the case. He has maintained his innocence and said he plans to appeal these charges, according to the Associated Press.

Flood beat Democratic state Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks in Nebraska's 1st Congressional District, which leans conservative.

He will finish out Fortenberry's ninth term and run for reelection again in November. Flood will likely face Brooks again with the presumed advantage of having beaten her the first time.

During his run, Flood blamed President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for rising inflation and promised to fight against their policies.

Though Flood beat Brooks unofficially with about 53%, compared to Fortenberry having beat Democratic challengers by over 60%. Flood promises to do more to boost his support in the area.

“I recognize that I have work to do,” Flood said.
