Republican Mayra Flores takes House seat from Democrat in Texas in special election
Flores becomes the first Mexican-born female to serve in House
Republican Mayra Flores on Tuesday night flipped a House seat for the GOP in a Texas special election.
Flores defeated Democrat Dan Sanchez in the state's 34th Congressional District. The seat was previously held by Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela, who resigned in late March to take a lobbying job.
The Associated Press called the race. In winning, Flores becomes the first Mexican-born female to serve in the House. Her family moved to the United States when she was 6 years old, according to Fox News.
Flores will finish out the remainder of Vela's term that expires in January. However, the district will essentially be dissolved later this year as a result of redistricting.
