Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an environmental lawyer and son of the late presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, launched his campaign Wednesday for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.

Hundreds of people attended Kennedy's campaign announcement in Boston, as audience members held signs that were passed out containing the message "Heal the divide," CNN reported.

Priorities on his campaign website include having an honest government, respecting civil liberties, protecting the environment, bringing U.S. troops home, reconciliation between Americans and revitalization of the U.S. economy.

While Kennedy lives in Los Angeles, he decided to launch his campaign in Boston as a nod to his family's deep political connections to the Massachusetts city. Kennedy has garnered attention in recent years for his opposition to COVID-19 lockdown measures and advocacy against vaccinations.

The official announcement was not unexpected, considering Kennedy filed the requisite paperwork earlier this month.

Author and former 2020 candidate Marianne Williamson is the only other Democrat to formally launch a 2024 primary bid.

Kennedy is starting his campaign off with support from 14% of people who voted for President  Biden in 2020, according to a poll released Wednesday from USA TODAY/Suffolk University. Just 67% of Biden's 2020 supporters said they would support him again.
