From fledgling Democrat star to Georgia Gov. candidate: Stacey Abrams has banked millions since 2018

Abrams spent three years in private sector after 2018 gubernatorial loss; her get-out-the-vote effort helped Biden win presidency.

Democrat stalwart and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams now has a net worth of $3.17 million, compared to $109,000 when she ran for the same office in 2018, according to financial disclosures last month.

The records were reviewed by the Associated Press and show the 48-year-old Abrams' emergence on the national political stage after her loss four years ago coincides with her financial gains.

Since 2018, Abrams has become the face of voter mobilization activism in the U.S., with her get-out-the vote effort in Georgia considered critical in Democrat Joe Biden's winning the state and the presidency in 2020.

In this year's general election, Abrams, a Yale Law School graduate and former Georgia state legislator, will likely face either GOP Gov. Brian Kemp in a rematch of their 2018 contest or the incumbent's Donald Trump-backed primary opponent, former Sen. David Perdue.

In the four years since her first statewide campaign, Abrams has earned $6 million, primarily from her books and speeches, according the wire service's review.

Republicans who years ago criticized Abrams for owing the IRS and having big credit card debt are now criticizing her for using her political career for personal financial gain.

"It is remarkable to me that success is now being demonized by the Republicans," Abrams has responded. "I believe every person should have the opportunity to thrive. And because I had three years where I was in the private sector, I leveraged all three years."
