Voter confidence in the U.S. electoral system has significantly decline since January of last year, according to CNN poll released Thursday.

Whereas 59% of Americans in January 2021 had some confidence that the nation's elections reflected the will of the people, only 42% shared that sentiment in the new poll.

Those who were very confident decreased to 16%, from 36% in January 2021.

Nearly half of those polled, 48% said it was "somewhat likely" that elected officials would successfully overturn election results to favor their own party in the next few years.

Democrats saw their confidence in the election process erode the most, with 90% saying they were "somewhat confident" in January 2021 compared to only 57% in July 2022. For independents, that figure declined from 54% to 38%.

Republicans, the poll showed, saw a modest increase in electoral confidence. Their metric rose 23% to 29% over the past year and a half.
