EV maker Rivian will pause construction at a $5 billion manufacturing plant in Georgia

Electric truck maker Rivian says it will pause construction of a $5 billion plant in Georgia.

Georgia and local governments in the state had offered the California-based automaker an incentive package totaling as much as $1.5 billion, according to the Associated Press. This is one of the largest ever offered for an American auto manufacturing facility.

Rivian had planned to begin producing its new R2 midsize SUVs at the Georgia plant, east of Atlanta. But in a statement Thursday, the company said it would instead move that production to an existing facility in Normal, Illinois.

However, Rivian also said a Georgia plant is still a big part of business plan. 

“Rivian’s Georgia plant remains an extremely important part of its strategy to scale production of R2 and R3,” the company said.

No timeline was included in the statement for when construction in Georgia would resume.
