Republican North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd has put forward a bill to permit the deportation of illegal immigrants who assault law enforcement officers.

The Protect Our Law enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act of 2023 will make it so an "alien who has been convicted of, who admits having committed, or who admits committing acts constituting the essential elements of, and offense involving the assault of a law enforcement officer is deportable," Fox News reported.

Specifically, the assault would have to occur while the officer was on duty or develop as a result of the performance of their duties or status as a law enforcement officer.

"If an illegal immigrant commits the crime of assaulting an officer, they should be subject to immediate deportation," Budd told the outlet. "Our lawmakers must always back the men and women who protect and serve our communities."

"Supporting our police includes removing dangerous people who do them harm," he added.

The North Carolina lawmaker's plan comes during National Police Week. The House version of the bill passed on Wednesday 255-175.
