GOP Rep. Fred Upton, who voted to impeach Trump, will not seek reelection

Upton becomes the 4th GOP Rep. to vote for Trump's impeachment to bow out of running for reelection.

Michigan GOP Rep. Fred Upton announced Tuesday he will retire from the House instead of seeking another term in the 2022 election cycle.

Upton was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach then-President Donald Trump following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
He joins three other Reps. in that group who have announced they will not be seeking reelection this cycle. Reps. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), John Katko (R-N.Y.), and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) are also stepping back from public office.

Upton, who has been in Congress since 1986, says his retirement decision is unrelated to his impeachment vote.

"This was our decision, independent of what I did with Trump," he said.

The former president endorsed Steve Carra, a challenger to Upton in the GOP upcoming primary. Redistricting in Michigan also put Upton into the same district as GOP Rep. Bill Huizenga, who is runnig again.
