A man accused of attacking a Democratic member of Congress in her apartment pleaded guilty to assault on Thursday.

The D.C. U.S. attorney's office confirmed that Kendrid Khalil Hamlin admitted to assaulting Democratic Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig as well as a detective and police officer on the same day, The Hill reported. Authorities arrested Hamlin shortly after the incident.

Hamlin had 12 prior criminal convictions, per The Hill, a record that prompted criticism of the District from Craig for not keeping him behind bars.

"I got attacked by someone who the District of Columbia has not prosecuted fully over the course of almost a decade, over the course of 12 assaults before mine that morning. And so I think we have to think about how in the world can we make sure that we’re not just letting criminals out," she said earlier this year.

In early February, Hamlin allegedly followed Craig into her apartment building and into the elevator. Hamlin informed the lawmaker that he was coming into her apartment to use the bathroom, prompting objections from Craig. Hamlin then punched and grabbed her. Craig escaped by splashing him with hot coffee.
