McCarthy calls on DeSantis to negotiate with Disney

The entertainment giant has sued DeSantis over what they called a "targeted campaign of government retaliation."

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy this week called on Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to negotiate with the Walt Disney Co. after the governor floated building a prison next to Disney World.

DeSantis and Disney have engaged in a longstanding feud ever since the company came out in opposition to the state's Parental Rights in Education Law last year that critics had dubbed a "Don't Say Gay" bill. The governor has since reformed a self-governing economic zone that included Disney World and floated building a prison near the park.

McCarthy suggested that such proposals would accomplish little and suggested that the governor attempt to resolve his feud with one of the state's major employers.

"I'd give him the same advice I gave President Biden... Why wouldn’t you sit down and negotiate and talk. If there’s differences, you can always find ways that you can solve this problem," he said, according to The Hill. "This is a big employer inside Florida. I think the governor should sit down with them. I don’t think the idea of building a prison next to a place that you bring your family is the best idea. I think it’d be much better if you sat down and solved the problems."

The entertainment giant has sued DeSantis over what they called a "targeted campaign of government retaliation" in response to its opposition to the bill.
